Introduction
In a groundbreaking move, Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL), a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has recently finalized a deal to acquire a 100% equity stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited (WMMI). This strategic acquisition positions Tata Group as the first Indian company set to manufacture Apple iPhones, marking a significant milestone in India’s electronics manufacturing landscape.
Details of the Acquisition
The Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) for this historic acquisition was signed with SMS InfoComm (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Wistron Hong Kong Limited. Located near Bengaluru, the Wistron plant will now fall under the ownership of Tata Electronics. The CEO & Managing Director of Tata Electronics, Randhir Thakur, expressed his excitement, emphasizing the importance of this move for the growth of the Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) industry in India.
Thakur stated, “Signing of the Share Purchase Agreement to acquire Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited is an important milestone for us. The EMS industry in India is poised for growth given the strong support from the Government, and we are happy to be participating in this growth story.”
Government Support and Regulatory Approvals
Acknowledging the support from the Indian government, Thakur highlighted the growth potential in the manufacturing sector. The deal is now awaiting necessary approvals, and Wistron will make official announcements and filings in accordance with applicable regulations.
Congratulations from Government Officials
Following the announcement of the deal on October 27, MoS IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar congratulated the Tata Group for its pioneering achievement. He praised the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, noting how it has positioned India as a key hub for smartphone manufacturing and exports. Chandrasekhar emphasized that Tata Companies, within two and a half years, will commence iPhone production for both domestic and global markets.
Expansion Plans and Future Prospects
With the acquisition of the Wistron unit, the Tata Group is gearing up to expand its operations by undertaking the complete assembly of iPhones in India. This strategic move places Tata Electronics among the elite group of iPhone manufacturers, alongside Foxconn, Pegatron, Luxshare, and Wistron.
Looking ahead, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shed light on Tata Electronics’ collaboration with Foxconn and Pegatron for the preliminary manufacturing process of the iPhone 17, scheduled for a 2025 launch. This development underscores Apple’s commitment to diversify its global supply chain, reducing reliance on manufacturing in China.
Tata Electronics’ acquisition of Wistron India signifies a pivotal moment for the Indian electronics manufacturing industry. As the first Indian company to enter the exclusive circle of Apple iPhone manufacturers, Tata Group’s foray into smartphone production marks a significant stride towards positioning India as a global manufacturing hub.
